Sandbox AQ, the AI and quantum company established as a spin-off from Google’s parent company, Alphabet, in 2022, has acquired Good Chemistry, a quantum and computational chemistry startup based in Vancouver. For an undisclosed amount, the acquisition brings Good Chemistry’s cloud-based tools for accelerating material design into Sandbox AQ’s portfolio. Good Chemistry’s platform enables developers to construct chemical simulation applications and workflows using algorithms in quantum chemistry, machine learning, and quantum computing.

Nadia Carlsten, VP of Sandbox AQ, mentioned in a press release that the acquisition not only enhances Sandbox’s global presence but also adds proven technologies, including simulation capabilities, and major customers such as Dow Chemical to its offerings. As part of the deal, all of Good Chemistry’s existing investors, including Green Sands Equity and Accenture Ventures, are now part of Sandbox AQ’s investor base.

Sandbox AQ emphasizes the growing importance of simulation in its work, spanning drug discovery and material design across various sectors. With the addition of Good Chemistry, Sandbox AQ welcomes 25 experts in computational and quantum chemistry, AI and software engineering, and quantum computing science. Arman Zaribafiyan, founder of Good Chemistry, is joining Sandbox AQ as the head of product for simulation platforms.

The integration of Good Chemistry’s software, Qemist Cloud, and Tangelo into Sandbox AQ’s enterprise software portfolio is part of the acquisition. Qemist allows users to leverage quantum chemistry through simulation, while Tangelo facilitates the execution of chemistry experiments across various quantum cloud providers and hardware devices. The collaboration aims to advance Sandbox AQ’s capabilities in highly accurate chemical simulation, with applications in areas such as drug synthesis and material development.
